Here at home in our part of the world.
The American Friends of Peace. Now is calling on the United States to increase pressure on Israel while opposing sanctions to force Iran to end its nuclear development activities. In a statement released to the media on Sunday, the organization said that imposing sanctions and setting deadlines to end its nuclear programs were the "wrong policy" for dealing with Iran.
The group meanwhile continues to simultaneously call for the U.S. to step up its pressure on Israel to freeze all construction in any area restored to the state during the 1967 Six Day War, including the nation's capital, Jerusalem.
"For those who believe in Mideast peace, Iran remains an issue of central importance, and our new policy on Iran represents the only effective approach for dealing with Iran -- one that looks soberly at the current situation... continued U.S. engagement efforts, coupled with realistic expectations and a strategy that is ready and able to adapt to what remains a dynamic situation," the statement said.
The organization added in its statement, "Engaging Iran, Promoting Peace" that it "opposes efforts by many Jewish organizations to promote new sanctions to 'cripple' Iran's economy as well as a mid-September deadline on U.S. engagement efforts."
Peace Now vehemently opposes the strategy of imposing sanctions in order to [deliberately inflict] "suffering on civilians in the hope that if the people are miserable enough, they will pressure their government to change course."
Debra DeLee, president and CEO of Americans for Peace Now, wrote in an op-ed published last week by an American Jewish news wire service that the strategy was not only "dubious morally, but so is its efficacy. Such strategies failed in Iraq, Cuba and Gaza, as well as in Iran itself."
DeLee acknowledged that it was important to convince Iran to stop its nuclear program, but warned that "tougher sanctions against Iran could backfire."
However, increasingly severe economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council for more than a year have been ineffective in persuading Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khameini, to halt its race towards nuclear technology. Intelligence agencies believe that Iran is working towards developing an atomic weapon, and Israel's military intelligence officials have said that the Islamic Republic may well be capable of producing a nuclear warhead within the next year.
Ahmadinejad has also repeatedly vowed to "wipe the Zionist state off the map."

Israeli columnists advise Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that by putting
Israeli interests first, those who pressure him will end up respecting him.
Yoram Ettinger, a former Israeli Consul General to the U.S. and an expert on Israeli-American relations, writes that Israel has often resisted American pressure in the past earning American respect in the process. For instance, in 1950, 1967, and 1970, various American governments tried to pressure the respective Israeli governments regarding Jerusalem. The U.S. wanted Israel not to assume control of parts of Jerusalem, to cede control over parts of the city, and/or to stop building in the capital. In each case, Ettinger writes, "the U.S. Administration pressured, Israel constructed, Jerusalem expanded and the Jewish State earned strategic respect."
"Submission to Pressure Exacerbates Pressure"
The American government has frequently exerted pressure on Israel on others issues as well, often concerning national security. These include Israels declaration of independence, construction of a nuclear reactor, striking out at the Egypt-Syria-Jordan military alliance in 1967, bombing Iraq's nuclear reactor, and more. "Defiance of pressure entails short-term cost but enhances long-term national security,"
Ettinger concludes. "Submission to
pressure exacerbates pressure. Fending off pressure is required, in order to
attain strategic goals [but] avoiding pressure, through concessions, leads to
departure from strategic goals."
Ettinger continues to remind Israelis, as he has been doing for years, that the President of the United States is only one of three branches of government. "U.S. public and Congressional support of Israel is robust," he writes, giving the following examples:
* 71 Senators signed an August 10, 2009 letter calling upon President Obama to shift pressure from Israel to Arab countries.
* The Democratic Chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, Howard Berman, called upon Obama to end his preoccupation with settlements.
* The Democratic Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer, resents Obama's opposition to Jewish construction in eastern Jerusalem. * The strongest (Democratic) Senator, Daniel Inouye, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, is the most effective supporter of the US-Israel connection since 1948. Obama cannot get his legislative agenda without Inouye's support.
* While Congress has reservations about Israel's settlements policy, Congress
opposes sanctions against Israel."
Following the 1991 Gulf War, Ettinger notes, Israel asked for emergency assistance, which then-President George Bush and his Secretary of State James Baker rejected. However, Congress supported the request, and Israel received $650 million in cash and $700 million in military systems. This was a year after Bush/Baker attempted to cut 5% of the foreign aid to Israel, ostensibly because of Israel's settlements activity, but Congress opposed the idea and it was rescinded.
Schiff: Netanyahu Has What to Answer Shaul Schiff, a long-time columnist for the religious-Zionist HaTzofeh newspaper, writes in this weeks BSheva that Netanyahu had no reason to stand by quietly during his recent visit to Germany while his hosts made snide comments about the outposts.
It was reported, Schiff wrote, that throughout the visit, Chancellor Merkel, and the local press "did not stop talking about the outposts In an atmosphere like that, who said the Prime Minister of the State of Israel has to be polite and reserved when standing on the land whose inhabitants destroyed six million Jews? Why should he not stand with Jewish pride before the cameras and the microphones and demand: How can Germany and the European Union allow themselves to be dragged around regarding issues of no consequence, issues that will be determined and decided easily in the framework of a final agreement while on the agenda stands the question of the destruction of the State of Israel?!"
"Why should the European Union sponsor Israeli agents to count every Jewish
floor tile in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem," Netanyahu could also have
asked, according to Schiff, "when Hizbullah is arming with Iranian weapons and
plans to destroy Israeli population centers and turn Lebanon into utter chaos as
Instead of crying, "Theyre pressuring me," Netanyahu should demand, "Where were you and your protests when our civilian population in the south was bombed day and night from the areas from which Israel retreated simply as a gesture towards future peace?"
Pressure is Only Psychological
The bottom line, Ettinger states, is that Obamas pressure upon Netanyahu vis-à-vis settlements is only psychological, and nothing more. "He was not elected to uproot Jewish settlements and prevent Jewish construction in Jerusalem The Arab-Israeli conflict is not among Obama's top priorities, and his position on Israel is not compatible with most Democrats. Obama needs the support of Israel's friends on Capitol Hill, in order to advance his primary domestic and national security/international agendas."
Al-Qaeda Blames 9/11 on US Support for IsraelElul 25, 5769, 14 September 09 09:28by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
American support for Israel was the reason for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001, according to an audio message purported to be from Osama bin Laden, the leader of the international Al-Qaeda terrorist organization. The whereabouts of Bin Laden are not known, and the video image accompanying the audio featured only a still picture of him.
The title of the audio was, "Message to the American People." and was released two days after the eighth anniversary of the multiple aerial attacks on the U.S.
"If you think about your situation well, you will know that the White House is occupied by pressure groups," the speaker on the audiotape said. "Rather than fighting to liberate Iraq - as Bush claimed - it (the White House) should have been liberated."
Bin Laden added that U.S. President Barack Obama does not have enough power to change American policies. "The bitter truth is that the neo-Conservatives continue to cast their heavy shadows upon you," he continued. "All we will do is to continue the war of attrition against you on all possible axes, like we exhausted the Soviet Union for ten years until it collapsed with grace from Allah the Almighty and became a memory of the past."
Al-Qaeda Possibly in Lebanon
A terrorist cell claiming to be associated with Al-Qaeda has taken responsibility for two Katyusha attacks on northwestern Israel late Friday afternoon. "Your brothers fired two Katyusha rockets from south Lebanon which landed in the Nahariya settlement in the north of occupied Palestine," claimed the terrorist website.
Al-Qaedas numbers are fewer than they were in 2001, according to intelligence analysts, but its leadership remains at large except for the American killing of Mohammed Atef, the terrorist group's military director.
"Al-Qaedas affiliates, especially in North Africa and Yemen, have been murderously active," wrote the New Yorkers Lawrence Wright this week. "The Taliban, Al-Qaedas greatest ally, is making a comeback in Afghanistan and threaten much of western Pakistan. The fact that Al-Qaeda is still kicking, twenty-one years after its founding, is a testament to its adaptability - and to the failure of the U.S. and its allies to penetrate the organization.
"Many hope Al-Qaeda has been put to sleep, but the truth is, as long as bin Laden is free, he and his followers pose a threat.
Foreign media reported Monday morning that U.S. forces killed eight terrorists in the third drone attack in a week in the Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan. No senior Taliban or Al-Qaeda leaders were reported to be killed in the latest strikes, but a senior Al-Qaeda leader, Mustafa al Jaziri, may have been killed in an aerial attack last week, according to sources quoted by the Long War Journal.

Chick Pub. Tract Don't Muslims worship the same God as Christians? Many Christians accept the Muslim claim that we both worship the same God. They claim that they call him Allah, while we call him God. It is not unusual to hear Christian leaders make such statements. Bible societies have even gone so far as to use the name Allah in the Bibles they produce for Arab Christians. The problem with this is two-fold. First, history and archeology show clearly that Allah was worshipped as a pagan moon god long before Mohammed came on the scene. Robert Morey, author of "The Islamic Invasion," explains: "Islam's origins have been traced back by scholars to the ancient fertility religion of the worship of the moon god which was always the dominant religion of Arabia. The moon god was worshipped by praying toward Mecca several times a day, making an annual pilgrimage to the Kabah which was a temple of the moon god, running around the Kabah seven times, caressing an idol of a black stone set in the wall of the Kabah, running between two hills, making animal sacrifices, gathering on Fridays for prayers, giving alms to the poor, etc. These were pagan rites practiced by the Arabs long before Muhammad was born." "What religion today practices the pagan rites of the moon god? Islam! This explains why the crescent moon is the symbol of Islam. It is placed on top of mosques and minarets and displayed on hats, flags, rugs, amulets and even jewelry. Every time you see the Muslim symbol of a crescent moon, you are seeing the ancient symbol of the moon god."
Second, if you read the Qur'an's description of Allah, and read the Bible's description of God, it becomes obvious you are reading about two different persons. Allah orders his followers to kill those who deny Islam, while God instructs us to love our enemies. Allah had no son while God sent His Son to die for sinful men. Allah is "unknowable" while God seeks a personal relationship with His creation, man.
The spirit behind Islam is an entirely different spirit... a spirit that denies the deity of Jesus Christ. Any Christian who accepts the notion that Allah is God creates an impossible situation. Since the Qur'an contains our only revelation about Allah, they will be forced to look there as their authority. The Qur'an specifically denies the deity of Christ! All Christian witness ends right there.
