How Authoritative are the Scriptures?

This is the question we must all settle if we are to read the Bible as the Word of God, and to have assurance of our faith in God, and peace in our hearts.  We must settle this question if we are to share our faith in Jesus Christ as Peter said: "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:" 1 Peter 3:15

Let us begin with the oldest revelation of authority written by God, Consider "The Gospel in the Stars"  Gen.1:14  "And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: " Consider Amos 5:8  :Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name: "  Consider Job 9:9  "Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.  Again in Job." 38:31 " Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?"

These are signs called constellations are in the heavens.  There are twelve major signs plus others that tell the story of the gospel, and are in perfect agreement with it.  God had to put them up there, and gave mankind the ability to read them, so that there was a preacher for all to hear from Adam to God's judgment of the flood.

Did you know a system for hieroglyphs in the skies known as constellations was exhumed among the remains of Assyrians and Chaldeans.  The same things have been found among primitive peoples antedating the founding of Babel.  Some of the same kind of forms and designs were found on tablets in cuneiform in writings before Moses time.   Studies of ancient peoples understanding of constellations in their religious   elements in old civilizations such as Iranian or Mithras, Aryans, Bactrians, Indians, Medes, Persians, Chaldeans, Hindoos, Chinese, Egyptian, Romans, and Greeks, long before Jewish and Christian writings.  Investigators came to the same basic conclusion. That God preached His Gospel (Bible) in the stars, for all to understand and put their hope and faith in Him.

Therefore, Apostle Paul speaks of all mankind knowing what was said there in Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek".

Paul goes on to explain why the gospel in the sky proves God's integrity as a holy and righteous God, because all mankind was given the gospel that they may be saved.  Romans 1:17 - 23  "17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things."

Then consider Paul's admonition to Titus as to what should, be preached. Titus 1:1 - 5 " Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; 2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; 3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; 4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. 5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:"

THE AUTHORITY OF THE SCRIPTURES  As no study would be effectual if it were not authoritative. Though I claim no authority of myself, I do claim the authority of the Scriptures, and I give the following reasons for my doing so.

1. THERE IS THE UNBROKEN UNITY OF THE SCRIPTURES; both the Old and New Testaments declare three basic truths.

(a) ONLY ONE STORY, THAT OF GOD SEEKING MAN, not man seeking God from Genesis to Revelation.

(b) ONLY ONE PERSON IS SPOKEN OF THROUGHOUT ALL OF THE SCRIPTURES from Genesis to Revelation, Jesus Christ, the Lord.

(c) ONLY ONE METHOD by which God would re-establish man's union with Himself, THAT OF REDEMPTION, through the promised virgin born seed of the woman, the Son of God, Jesus Christ the Lord.

2. THERE IS AN UNBROKEN UNITY IN THE PERSON AND WORK OF GOD FOR MAN. That unity is declared in 66 books written by 38 authors over a period of more than 1650 years. Though many were contemporaries of one another, few communicated with each other. Such unity is impossible in the writings of men.

Let me remind you of a truth we all know.  I imagine you have experienced playing a game, as I did in grammar school. The teacher would have the one in the front seat in the first row write out a little story and give it to her.  Then that person would turn and tell it to the student in the seat behind and each one would do the same until it reached the person in the front seat of the last row.  That one would stand and tell the story that was told to him or her.  Then the teacher would read the original story and there would be a roar of laughter for the story would hardly resemble the original story.  That story was told in a room where it was repeated by twenty students that spoke the same language in a period of less than twenty five to thirty minutes.  Yet it could not be kept true to the original. in just a few minutes. try it simply cannot be done.

That evidence points to the fact that the Bible could not have been written by thirty eight men over a period of one thousand and fifty years and have perfect unity, in its content.   It is Impossible for man alone, it required divine intervention.  Is not that alone sufficient evidence and reason to put our faith in the Scriptures as the authoritative Word of God?

If you need more evidence consider other amazing facts about the Bible.

3. THERE IS AN UNBROKEN RECORD OF FULFILLMENT OF THE SCRIPTURES.  There has not been one failure in almost 6000 years of Biblical history!  There is no record known of any one or any writings of men with such a record in the history of mankind!  Is it reasonable to deny its authority?  Is not that alone sufficient evidence and reason to put our faith in the Scriptures as the authoritative Word of God?

If you need more evidence consider this.

4. THE BIBLE CLAIMS THE FINAL AUTHORITY FOR FAITH AND PRACTICE.

(a) By reason it is the Word of God given to man.

(b) By reason of the fact it was confirmed by Jesus as God's Word, when He quoted the Old Testament writings and read from the Septuagint, from which we get much of the Scriptures.

Only Jesus Christ, the Lord, has the authority to authenticate the Scriptures, for He is the Living Word of God.  "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." John 1:1-3, 14.

The Apostle Paul believed in the authority of the Scriptures and Jesus Christ. "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;"  Heb. 1:1-2  Consider these words of Jesus: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

If you need yet more evidence consider this:

5. CONSIDER THE MIRACLE OF THE PRESERVATION OF GOD'S WORD TO HIS PEOPLE.  No writings of man have ever endured the centuries of oppression and attempts to destroy it from the face of the earth, as the Scriptures have, yet today they are available world wide. There are no other writings that can make these claims, and the King James Version has been around more years than any other in the English speaking world.

Consider this reason for accepting the King James Version of the Bible as the Word of God and final authority for faith and life, over all the other versions.  When they found the Dead Sea Scrolls the book of Isaiah was found intact. That scroll was written 400 years earlier than the scroll from which the King James version was translated, yet they were the same. That declares the King James is a reliable copy of the oldest original scrolls known. Therefore, history demonstrates the King James Version of the Bible should be accepted as the most authoritative copy of the Word of God. Therefore, it is used throughout this website.

However, there is yet another reason I believe God is real, Jesus is real, and the Holy Spirit is real, yes the Bible is really the Word of God.  It is the most solid evidence of all.

6. THE POWER OF CHRIST AND HIS WORD, THE BIBLE TO CHANGE LIVES.  Consider: 2 Cor. 5:17  "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." My life has been changing from what I was, to what He is, from the day I received Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I am being made a new creature in Christ. However like the Apostle Paul I must say I am not like Him as yet, but I am pressing toward that mark. How is that change taking place? I am being made a new creature in Christ, through His living in me, conforming me into His image and likeness, through the agency of His Spirit and His Word, and the Holy Spirit does not fail His assigned work".

This is the absolute will of God for every believer in Christ. Consider: 2 Peter 1:3-4  "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

There are no exceptions, that change is taking place in the life of every true believer, and will continue to the time that one is taken up to be with the Lord.  Is not that changing life alone sufficient reason to put our faith in the Scriptures as the authoritative Word of God?  Now therefore, the rate of change in that individual, is in direct proportion to that persons willingness to choose to obey the will of God, as it is revealed in His Holy Word. Nevertheless, that change is taking place in every born again believer. In reality it all boils down to the fact that it is up to us to choose to believe or not to believe.  Perhaps you say you cannot muster up the faith to believe. No problem: the truth is no one can.  Consider this: John 14:6  "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."  Consider: John 6:44 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day."  Consider: Ephes. 2:8-10  "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."God will give you the faith to believe, if He knows you will be willing to trust and follow Him, after you receive it. He is just waiting for you to prove Him by asking Him for it, He has never refused such a request when it comes from an honest heart felt desire.  Consider this: John 1:11-12  "He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:" Consider: Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

How do you speak to God?  You speak to Him from the heart, with your thoughts, but you can also say it verbally. Talk to Him as a friend, for He is. Consider this: Romans 5:6-8  " For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Ask Him to forgive your sins, and for going your own way.  He will hear you, forgive you, and give you the faith you need to follow His Son, and His Word.

If you say, you do believe the Bible to be the Word of God, and say you are a believer in Christ.  Let me ask you this:  Have you the evidence of a changing life through the power of His Word and the indwelling Spirit of God in you?   If not what testimony do you have, that there is a living God, and He is living in you?

For that changing life is the only God given assurance spoken of in the Bible as giving such assurance both to you and those around you.

Consider the importance of your life. Romans 8:14  "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God, " and 2 Cor. 3:2-3  "Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: 3Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart."  Consider: 2 Cor. 4:3-4  "But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

You are important, and the life you live is important to the Lord, and those around you.  Therefore, you must make a decision as to what you look to as your authority, for faith and practice of life.

As for me I accept the authority of the King James Version of the Bible for all the above reasons.   What is your authority?
