Unit 4d  Living the Christian Life series part 1.

Righteousness

THE  APPLICATION  OF GOD'S  CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES

The Application of the Principles and Precepts of Godís Character are a privilege and responsibility in living the Christ like life.

We are now going to consider: the principles and precepts that come from the nature and character of God. They constitute the doctrine of the church.  Every true doctrine is in harmony with God's attributes and so carry responsibilities to which we must answer to God.

The knowledge and application of these will enable you to make choices and decisions in the known will of God, keeping you in the place of His blessing. They reflect His nature and character bringing you in His image and likeness, revealing Him to the world around you.

Our study and meditation will be in each of the following areas.

Principles: what we are to do.

The laws or rules for establishing the source of action expected by God.  They will be in harmony with God's attributes as they are derived from them, unless they are the principles of sin which are derived from Satan.

Precepts:
how to carry out the principle
.

The method of operation or way we demonstrate or hold to the principle involved in our position or action we take. These come out of the action of God in the Old Testament and the life of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

Our Responsibilities: our Duties to God and man.

Our obligation to respond to God and others by His standards and values and not ours or the world's.

We will look at each of the following areas as they apply....

Living the Christian Life series part 1.

The Application of the Principles and Precepts of Godís Character are a privilege and responsibility in living the Christ like life.

APPLYING THE PRINCIPLE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

The PRINCIPLE of Righteousness comes from God as one of His attributes.  It is part of His nature and character and is inseparable from His holiness.

"Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments.  Thy testimonies that thou  hast commanded are righteous and very faithful."                  Psalm 119:137-138

               Consider: Gen. 18:25;  Rev. 19:11

The PRECEPT of Righteousness is three fold.

1. Justice is the result of applying God's righteous standards and values.

"Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and lt him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Isa. 55:7-8

    Consider: Prov.  21:3;  Phil. 4:8

2. Our standing with God the result of Christ living the law for us and dying for our failure.

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."  2 Cor. 5:21

3. Our standing before others by God's standards and values, not mans.  By following His   ways not the world's or ours.

"Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God."  Phil. 1;11

              Consider: 2 Cor. 3:2-3;  6:1-10;  6:14-18

Remember: A righteous standing in the world is relative to the eyes of the beholder, be it God and the spiritual minded Christian or the carnally minded and unsaved.  Psa. 38:12; Mat. 9:4; Titus 1:15-16. 1 Pet.3:15

The RESPONSIBILITY of Righteousness

TO GOD:  personally is our opportunity to show our love and respect to God for who and what He is, and is two fold.

              1. To stand by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ for us.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;"
Rom. 1:16-17

    Consider: Rom. 3:10-26;  5:12- 21;  6:1-18;  2 Cor. 5:21

2. To walk in His righteousness is true worship of God and is to be sought
before all other blessings for His glory.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."  Math.6:33

              Consider: Phil. 1:11;  Eph. 2:10.

TO OTHERS: To make known the work of Christ in us, by manifesting the new creation we are in Him.  We are to respond to those around us by His standards and values, in harmony with His nature and character.

"Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:  Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart."        2 Cor.3:2-3

Consider: Mat. 12:35; Rom. 12:2;  Phil. 2:13; 1 John 2:29;
Read 2 Cor. 6:1-7:1

We are not only to live righteous lives before others, but we are to teach others to do so also.  While not forgetting my son's sermon "Our walk talks greater than our talk, talks"

"And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,  In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;  And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will." 2 Tim. 2:24-26

    Consider: Mat. 28:19‑20;  2 Tim. 2:15,  3:15-17

AT HOME:  Husbands to teach the righteous ways of God to his wife and children.

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,  That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.  So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself." Eph. 5:25-28

   Consider: Deut. 6:1-7;  Psa. 78:5-7,  Rom. 14:-17-19, Philip. 1:27-29, James 3:13-18

TO CHURCH: To reflect the nature and character of God as a body of believers.

"And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;  That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God."  Phil. 1:9-11

             Consider: Phil. 1:27-29;  Rom. 14:17-19;  James 3:13-18

To Government:

"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." Prov. 14:34

 Consider: Prov. 1:20-33;  Isa. 54:14; 55:6-9;  56:1-22;  Chr.7:14

Self test: on God's Righteousness

These questions are more than an academic quiz, they help you think through the facts you have learned, so that you can form convictions as to the will of God for your life.  Remember meditation on God's Word is the key to gaining wisdom, and only when it is applied in your life are you assured of being in the will of God and the place of His blessing..
